The history of Burdwan Medical college as we see it today, is brief. But, the roots of this college date back to the Pre-Independence era. In those days, Burdwan town was served by the Ronald shay Medical School. The government decided to close it down in the year 1958. This left the town without any health care facility. In response to the made by the people of Burdwan, the government decided to have a Medical College – Thus was born Burdwan Medical College. The time was August 1969 when the first young men and women got admitted to this college, hearts full of hope & aspirations to become future doctors of India. The college then was under the University of Burdwan. In the year 1976, Government of West Bengal took the college. Presently it is under the Control of Government of West Bengal, Department of Health & Family Welfare.

Burdwan Medical College has the preclimical and Paraclinical departments separately situated in the a patch of lush green in Babur Bag. The hostels are inside the vast campus (except for ladies hostel ). The environment around is quite and soothing – a feature found unique in B.M.C. Nearby is Golap Bag with the Burdwan University P.G Department Campus.

The Clinical Departments are situated in the hospital. The total no. of beds in the hospital is about 1200. It caters to about 1200 patients per day. Now with the highly equipped radiotherapy and Cardiology units, a new jewel has been added to the crown.

The annual intake of students was 50 till 1999. The seats have been increased to 100 with effect from 2000. The students have to clear the state Medical Joint Entrance Examination to obtain seat in this college.

With the modern equipments and highly qualified faculties, Burdwan Medical College is the Model Medical College of West Bengal.
